Education:
School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London 1991 - 2000
PhD, Social AnthropologyI am writing to confirm Rachel's long attachment to SOAS as well as her brilliant representation of the best of the School's values. Rachel came to SOAS as an undergraduate, having previously trained and worked in design www.eventcomm.com. Her work as an undergraduate was brilliant, and we were delighted when she chose to stay on with us for her PhD. Rachel worked with artists from Africa in the UK as part of the Africa '95 festival, her follow up research was in Botswana. Rachel’s aim was to facilitate recognition of the artists' own critical understanding for their work by analyzing the narratives they wove around it even as they were working. This was something quite challenging at a time when (a) a critical language for contemporary African art was only just consolidating and (b) that language was mainly commanded by outsiders. Dr Christopher Davis (SOAS)
Skills:
Not cooking that's for sure :)
Interests:
HIV Awareness and Prevention; Contemporary Art; Storytelling. The Real Stories Gallery initiative has been inspired by the many voices of artists concerned for their friends and neighbours dealing daily with the spread of HIV. The participation of artists around the world will play an invaluable role in supporting their international colleagues, many of whom have to contend not only with the challenges of physically submitting to and benefiting from the real stories initiative, but also within many communities with the stigma of being associated with an HIV campaign. In a moment when there is still no cure for the HIV virus, the campaigns contribution to increased access to HIV prevention and awareness will save lives. "By our not speaking out and raising the awareness of the community, the numbers of HIV-infections will continue to escalate." Diane Victor, Art for Humanity “Break the Silence” HIV/AIDS portfolio pub. 2000. www.afh.org.za
