Southwest flight diverted to Phoenix due to threat
While the plane was in the air, F-16 fighter jets were diverted from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona to "monitor the situation from the air," said Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), a joint U.S.-Canadian operation.
"NORAD and Google have decided to go their separate ways and pursue other opportunities," Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for the project, told ABC News. "It was a mutually agreed upon decision that transpired earlier this year."
The other seven C-130s are being kept on the ground under an "operational hold," said Northern Command spokesman Michael Kucharek. In aviation terminology, an operational hold is technically different from grounding but the effect is the same.
