Abstract:
A variable-capacity compressor that includes a housing having an inlet for receipt of refrigerant and an outlet for return of refrigerant, and a plurality of compressing elements contained in the housing between the inlet and the outlet. The variable capacity compressor includes a valve having an electrical control. The valve is dedicated to fewer than all of the compressing elements. The valve is movable between a first state which communicates refrigerant flow to the compressing elements, and a second state that reduces or stops flow to the compressing elements. In an embodiment of the invention, an unloading controller has an operational modulation mode that includes cycling the valve between on and off states to provide a portion of compressor capacity. The unloading controller is further programmed to provide a minimum delay time between transitions between the first and second states, but no maximum dwell time between transitions.

Abstract:
In a system having low and high stage compressors with an oil separator downstream of each stage there can be a tendency for oil from the first stage to collect in the second stage. So, responsive to a low level of oil in the first stage oil system, oil is supplied from the second stage oil system to the first stage oil system.
The present invention provides an oil diffuser in the suction line of a compressor. The oil diffuser provides an increased cross sectional area whereby the flow velocity is decreased and further provides non-aligned entering and discharge lines whereby inertial forces and gravitational forces acting on oil flowing into the diffuser tends to move the oil away from the circuitous path necessary for entering into the discharge line. The resulting separated oil can enter the discharge line via a small hole in the tube which only permits metered mounts of oil to be supplied to the suction of the compressor.

Abstract:
A method of operating a multiple-compressor refrigeration system is provided. This method includes the steps of supplying, via a common supply line, refrigerant gas and oil to a plurality of compressors coupled in series, and attaching an oil flow conduit between adjacent compressors of the plurality of compressors. The oil flow conduit is configured to move oil from a compressor with a relatively higher pressure to a compressor with a relatively lower pressure. The method further includes controlling the pressure for each of the plurality of compressors by regulating a speed at which each of the plurality of compressors operates in order to maintain a pressure differential between the adjacent compressors to facilitate the flow of oil from the compressor with the relatively higher pressure to the compressor with the relatively lower pressure.
