A fitting for joining pipes, tubes, or conduits improves coupling capability particularly to a large bore pipe, generally of 2 inches and larger in diameter. The fitting includes a substantially cylindrical sleeve and ring. The sleeve has an inner surface defining a bore, configured to slidably receive the pipe at an open end. The inner sleeve surface also includes protrusions, which deform the outer surface of the pipe upon swaging. The fitting also includes an outer surface having multiple stepped lands of ascending height relative to the open end. The ring has an inner surface configured to engage the multiple ascending steps on the inner sleeve surface. The inner surface of the ring has descending steps that are positioned to interfere with the multiple ascending steps on the outside of the sleeve. Axial motion of the ring causes the ring to slide over the sleeve and apply a radial swaging force directly to the multiple stepped sleeve. The swaging force makes the ring overcome the interference and push down on the multiple ascending steps of the sleeve, which swages the sleeve to the pipe.
A swaging device is provided, including a die holder assembly including a head and a die block adapted to hold a first die and a second die respectively, and an actuator assembly, including a housing and a piston connected to the die block. In addition, a separate, removable strut cap is included, which is engaged to both the housing and the head. The strut cap is structured to secure the head during the compression of a workpiece.
A swaging tool for use in swaging axially swaged fittings for joining together pipes. The present invention provides a radially balanced axial force, for uniformly pushing a ring of an axially swaged fitting over a sleeve, to swage the fitting to the pipe. The swaging tool of the present invention includes a tubular housing, having an inner surface, which defines a bore. The bore is configured to receive a pipe section having an axially swaged fitting placed thereon in preparation for swaging. Preferably, the housing may be split lengthwise into two opposed sections, such that when the two sections are brought together, the sections completely surround a portion of the pipe section and the fitting. Each housing section is provided a plurality of pusher assemblies, each pusher assembly may preferably be connected to a source of hydraulic pressure, which when activated moves the pusher assembly axially to provide the axial force necessary for swaging the fitting. Each pusher assembly is made to uniformly contact the ring with a substantially equal amount of force, such that the ring is moved axially over the sleeve, which causes a radial force to be applied to the sleeve to swage the sleeve to the pipe section.
A swaging tool for swaging a fitting to a tube includes a tubular housing having a first jaw unit on a first end portion of the housing and a closed cylinder at a second end portion of the housing. The closed cylinder has a port for receiving pressurized fluid. A ram is movable in opposite axial directions in the closed cylinder of the housing. A piston having a second jaw unit is located in a middle portion of the housing in engagement with the ram. A stabilizing pin is slideably received through the piston and into the ram. Bearings are located on an end of the stabilizing pin and on the ram to react the moments generated during swaging directly into the housing.
