  • Method And Board Game For Teaching Vocabulary

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6598878, Jul 29, 2003
  • Filed:
    Jan 9, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/042667
  • Inventors:
    Sherwin D. Burrowes - Hightstown NJ 08520-5511
  • International Classification:
    A63F 300
  • US Classification:
    273243, 273272, 273429
  • Abstract:
The present invention is generally directed to a game for teaching vocabulary playable as a competition between two or more players having comparable or disproportionate vocabulary skills, the game comprising a game board with a play surface including a start point space, an end point space and a plurality of movement spaces arranged linearly to form a sequentially predetermined play path, select ones of the plurality of movement spaces including a first indicia for indicating a play command to a player, a set of game cards, each of the game cards including at least one vocabulary clue and a corresponding answer, a select one of the vocabulary clue of a select game card corresponding to a difficulty level which matches a vocabulary skill level assigned to a player, a set of PASS cards, each of the PASS cards being distributable to at least one opposing player when a player passes a turn, and redeemable by a passing player possessing a PASS card, a plurality of play pieces configured for marking movement on the play path between the start point space and the end point space, each of the plurality of play pieces being assignable to a player, and means for randomly generating a number to determine the number of movement spaces to move a current players play piece along the play path. The invention is further directed to a computerized version of the game.
  • Legibility For Alpha-Mosaic Characters

    view source
  • US Patent:
    43587887, Nov 9, 1982
  • Filed:
    Feb 27, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/238838
  • Inventors:
Sherwin D. Burrowes - East Windsor NJ
  • Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
  • International Classification:
    H04N 9535
    H04N 514
    G09G 116
    G09G 128
  • US Classification:
    358 22
  • Abstract:
In add-on alpha-mosaic character (teletext) decoders, the character signals pass through the limited bandwidth chroma channel of the TV receiver. For certain color combinations and signal durations this reduces legibility and contrast due to pulse stretching and amplitude reduction. The present invention determines if a pulse is less than a predetermined pulse width and has an amplitude difference with respect to a preceding pulse of less than a selected amount. If both conditions are met, then a luminance signal pulse is generated to substitute for the original pulse, the generated pulse having a large amplitude difference with respect to the preceding pulse for improved contrast. If the generated pulse would exceed the white level or go below the black level, then a pulse of opposite polarity with respect to the first generated pulse is generated to cancel the first generated pulse but still result in a large amplitude difference with respect to the preceding pulse.
  • Sampled Data Amplitude Detector As For An Agc Multiplier

    view source
  • US Patent:
    47853522, Nov 15, 1988
  • Filed:
    Sep 30, 1985
  • Appl. No.:
    6/782132
  • Inventors:
Sherwin D. Burrowes - East Windsor NJ
Alfred Y. Kwan - Mine Hill Township, Morris County NJ
  • Assignee:
RCA Licensing Corporation - Princeton NJ
  • International Classification:
    H04N 552
    H04N 944
  • US Classification:
    358174
  • Abstract:
A sampled data signal amplitude detector for use in PLL's, for example, includes an absolute value detector to generate the magnitudes of the signal samples to be measured. The magnitudes of pairs of successive samples are compared and the larger magnitude sample of each pair is provided to an averager. The averager, averages a predetermined number of the larger magnitude samples and outputs the average as the amplitude of the applied signal.
