  • Abstract:
A simple, effective, cost-efficient method of precipitating sulfate in an aqueous salt solution and removing the precipitate from the solution. The steps of the method include diluting the solution and slowly adding a precipitant to the solution. By following this method, a sulfate precipitate settles out of the solution quantitatively and can be easily separated from the sulfate-free supernatant.

  • Antimicrobial Salt Solutions For Food Safety Applications

  • US Patent:
    7090882, Aug 15, 2006
  • Filed:
    Jun 12, 2003
  • Appl. No.:
    10/460769
  • Inventors:
Robert Scott Koefod - Maple Grove MN, US
Timothy Freier - Maple Grove MN, US
  • Assignee:
    Cargill, Incorporated - Minneapolis MN
  • International Classification:
    A23L 1/15
  • US Classification:
    426326, 426327, 426335, 426654
  • Abstract:
Antimicrobial salt solutions for food safety and quality applications are disclosed. Because these solutions contain a substantial concentration of salt, they are adaptable to a variety of food-processing applications, such as for chilling brine applications, disinfecting meat baths/rinses, beef injection brines, poultry chill tanks, brines used in cheese manufacture, as a wash to kill on hard-boiled eggs, and as a wash to disinfect produce, which can become contaminated with and other pathogenic bacteria in the field. These make use of concentrated salt solutions that depress the freezing point of the solution, to provide a low temperature bath or shower in which food products can be cooled. A preferred formulation contains between 25 ppm and 25,000 ppm surfactant, between 0. 1% acid and 25% acid, and between 72. 5% and 99. 9% salt.

  • US Patent:
    7309451, Dec 18, 2007
  • Filed:
    Nov 8, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/270323
  • Inventors:
Robert Scott Koefod - Maple Grove MN, US
  • Assignee:
    Cargill, Incorporated - Wayzata MN
  • International Classification:
    C09K 3/18
  • US Classification:
    252 70, 106 13
  • Abstract:
A deicer comprises a mixture of a deicing agent and a radiation absorber. The radiation absorber results in an increased ice-melting capacity than using the deicing agent alone. The deicer can include a deicing salt such as sodium chloride, and the radiation absorber can include a dye, which can be water soluble. The deicer can also include a corrosion inhibitor and/or wetting agent. Further, a method of making a deicer includes mixing a deicing agent and a radiation absorber. The radiation absorber can be dissolved in a liquid, such as bittern, which can be sprayed on a solid deicing salt.
