Abstract:
A curable coating composition comprising functionalized oligomer components i and ii which cross-link at cure to form a three-dimensional network having chains of substantially uniform, controllable molecular weight between cross-links; oligomers i and ii having weight average molecular weights not exceeding about 3,000, a polydispersity for (i) not exceeding about 1. 5, and functionalities that react with one another to cross-link i and ii at cure to yield coatings with an excellent balance of hardness and mar resistance.
A curable coating composition comprising, in an organic solvent, a binder of (i) a non-isocyanate oligomer or blend of oligomers containing at least two functional groups with at least one being an epoxy group, the remaining being epoxy or hydroxyl; (ii) optionally a polyester, oligoester, or acrylic polymer with at least two hydroxyl groups; and (iii) an oligomeric crosslinker or blend of crosslinkers which contain at least two isocyanate groups.
Silicon Reactive Oligomers And Coating Compositions Made Therefrom
The present invention is directed to low VOC curable coating compositions suitable for use in various mar and etch resistant coatings, such as in automotive coatings. The binder of the composition includes silicon/hydroxyl and cross-linking components. The silicon/hydroxyl component includes one or more reactive oligomers having linear or branched cycloaliphatic moiety and at least two functional groups with at least one being a silane or silicate group, the remaining being a hydroxyl group. Applicants have unexpectedly discovered that by including silane or silicate functionalities in these reactive oligomers, the solids level of the composition can be significantly increased at reduced composition viscosities. As a result, such high solids low VOC compositions can be readily applied by conventional application means, such as by spraying.

Abstract:
A coating composition containing about 40-90% by weight of film forming binder and 10-60% by weight of an organic liquid carrier; wherein the binder contains about (a) 10-70% by weight, based on the weight of the binder, of a dispersed gelled acrylic polymer having (i) a core of gelled polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers which is not soluble in the organic liquid carrier and having chemically grafted thereto (ii) substantially linear stabilizer polymeric components that are soluble in the organic liquid carrier and comprise polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers and have a weight average molecular weight of about 500-20,000 determined by GPC (gel permeation chromatography) using polystyrene as the standard; wherein the core, the stabilizer polymeric component, or both contain at least 3% by weight of polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers having isocyanate groups attached thereto that are capable of reacting with component (b); (b) 30-90% by weight, based on the weight of the binder, of an oligomer or polymer or both having functional groups capable of reacting with the isocyanate groups of component (a); and (c) 0-60% by weight, based on the weight of the binder, of an organic polyisocyanate crosslinking agent.
