  • Filed:
    Jul 23, 2004
  • Appl. No.:
    10/565572
  • Inventors:
Daniel Frederick Hould - Oswego NY, US
Richard Stephen Tetro - Fulton NY, US
  • Assignee:
Black Clawson Converting Machinery, Inc. - Fulton NY
  • International Classification:
    B65H 19/18
  • US Classification:
    156157, 156504
  • Abstract:
A web splicer comprises a running roll supporter, a ready roll supporter, a paster roll movably mounted on a carriage, a driving device for moving the carriage, and a pressing device for selectively applying force to the paster roll. In representative embodiments, the paster roll is rotatably mounted on a bracket pivotally mounted on the carriage. To splice the new web of the ready roll to the moving web of the running roll, the ready roll is rotated, the carriage is moved so that the paster roll abuts the ready roll, whereby the running web is sandwiched between the ready roll and the paster roll, the pressing device presses the paster roll and thus also the running web against the ready roll, and then a prepared splice on the ready roll rotates into pressured contact with the running web in the nip between the ready roll and the paster roll.
  • Air Separator Method And Apparatus

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41704576, Oct 9, 1979
  • Filed:
    May 4, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/902938
  • Inventors:
Richard S. Tetro - Fulton NY
  • Assignee:
The Black Clawson Company - Middletown OH
  • International Classification:
    B01D 1902
    D21H 148
  • US Classification:
    55 46
  • Abstract:
A rotating separator removes air coating from pigmented paper coating liquid stock. The separator employs a cylindrical tank which is mounted for rotation about a vertical axis. The separator is operated in a filled condition and an air laden or froth fraction is removed from a radially central region of the tank at the top of the tank, while a non-rotating pickup receives air free coating from a region adjacent the wall of the tank near the tank bottom. A method of treating and applying such a coating includes the steps of pumping an air laden coating into a centrifugal separator while maintaining the separator in a filled condition, removing an air froth from the separator for return to the supply tank, and delivering a substantially air free coating directly to the inlet of a control without the imposition of any intermediate pumping apparatus. The centrifugal pumping action of the separator supplements the pressure head on the coating material.
  • Continuous Pressure Roll Winder

  • US Patent:
    44311400, Feb 14, 1984
  • Filed:
    Nov 27, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/325444
  • Inventors:
Richard S. Tetro - Fulton NY
  • Assignee:
The Black Clawson Company - Middletown OH
  • International Classification:
    B65H 1920
    B65H 7534
  • US Classification:
    242 56A
  • Abstract:
A turret-type winder particularly adapted for winding of impervious sheet-type web materials, such as plastics, provides self-contained and pivotally mounted pressure rolls which contact the cores and the winding roll throughout the entire winding process and throughout the indexing of the arms from a core loading station to a roll unloading station while maintaining the relative geometry of contact such that the web contacts the pressure roll at or before contacting the winding roll for effectively excluding the entrapment of air between the winding layers. A method of winding from a roll changer or other apparatus for providing a web of material includes the movement of the spindle end of the arms of a turret-type changer through the path of web leading to a winding roll to the back or remote side of the web so that the web lead is brought between the spindle arms and between the empty spindle and the winding roll. Thereafter, web transfer to a new core is accomplished by placing the web onto the core at a side of the core adjacent the axis of the turret, thereby providing movement of a self-contained pressure roll into coacting engagement with the core and the building or winding roll throughout the entire winding process at a region on the periphery of the core and the roll substantially at the web lead-in point and substantially at the nip for effectively excluding air throughout the entire winding process.

    44225865, Dec 27, 1983
  • Filed:
    Nov 27, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/325445
  • Inventors:
Richard S. Tetro - Fulton NY
  • Assignee:
The Black Clawson Company - Middletown OH
  • International Classification:
    B65H 1926
    B65H 1928
  • US Classification:
    242 56R
  • Abstract:
A cutting blade is mounted on an articulated arm for movement into location adjacent a new core and a free running span of the web on a winding machine. An adhesive strip is applied to the new core and then the core is rotated. A pressure roller on an opposite side of the web from the new core then urges the web into engagement with the surface of the new rotating core. As the adhesive strip rotates into contact with the moving web, it causes the web to be deflected into the knife which results in severing of the web. The leading edge of the severed web is maintained adhered to the adhesive strip so that no fold back of the leading edge occurs as the web continues to wind on the new core.

    Oct 2, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/947879
  • Inventors:
Richard S. Tetro - Fulton NY
  • Assignee:
The Black Clawson Company - Fulton NY
  • International Classification:
    B31F 506
    B65H 1916
    B65H 1918
    B65H 1920
  • US Classification:
    156157
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for forming a zero tail length splice between a new roll of web material (26) and an expiring roll (24) without interrupting continuous movement of the web (W). The method includes providing a splicing strip (60) adhesively secured to the leading edge (62) of the new roll (26) and releaseably secured to the surface of the new row (26) so that it can be rotated without unwinding until it is spliced to the moving web (W) of the expiring roll (24), placing a marker (80) on the circumference of the new roll (26), which marker (80) is located a predetermined distance ahead of the leading edge (62) of the new roll in a position to be sensed by a sensing device (162), as the roll (26) is rotated adjacent the moving web (W), sensing the location of the new roll (26) relative to the surface of the moving web (W) as it is brought into close proximity with the moving web (W) and stopping its movement so that the roll (26) is held in the desired position just above the surface of the moving web (W), bringing the new roll (26) up to a rotational speed so that its surface speed matches the surface speed of the moving web (W), forcing the moving web (W) into engagement with the rotating new roll (26) at the point of closest proximity therebetween after the leading edge on the new roll (26) has passed the point of closest proximity as determined by the sensing device (162), noting the passing of the marker (80), and then further activating a cutting means (102) upon the second passing of the marker (80), for severing the moving web (W) at a distance equal to the distance along the circumference of the new roll (26) from the leading edge (62) to the point of closest proximity between the new roll (26) and the moving web (W) so that substantially a zero tail length splice is formed when the splicing strip (60) adhesively engages the surface of the moving web (W) adjacent the tail end (168) thereof.
