A novel process and apparatus to combinatorially screen a large number of discrete compositions for electrocatalytic activity have been developed. The apparatus contains a cell body adjacent to a fluid permeable catalyst array support supporting multiple solids. A catalyst mask having holes that are in alignment with the multiple locations for supporting solids is placed over the catalyst array support, masking the solids. A cell cover is positioned adjacent to the catalyst array support, with the cell cover having a passage for monitoring the solids through the mask. A detector may be in alignment with the passage of the cell cover.

Abstract:
A direct carbon fuel electrochemical device and method for generating electricity. The apparatus includes a solid oxide electrolyte having an anode side and a cathode side. Carbon and at least one metal oxide are provided to the anode side for reaction at the anode and air is provided to the cathode side. At least a portion of the carbon is oxidized and at least a portion of the metal oxide is reduced to a metal or lower oxide metal oxide on the anode side. The metal or lower oxide metal oxide is electrochemically reoxidized with oxygen in the air, thereby generating electricity.
An electrochemical cell for producing copper having a dense graphite anode electrode and a dense graphite cathode electrode disposed in a CuCl solution. An anion exchange membrane made of poly(ethylene vinyl alcohol) and polyethylenimine cross-linked with a cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of acetone, formaldehyde, glyoxal, glutaraldehyde, and mixtures thereof is disposed between the two electrodes.

A water purification system having a porous anode electrode () and a porous cathode electrode (), each of which is made of graphite, at least one metal oxide, and an ion-exchange, cross-linked, polarizable polymer, and optionally comprises microchannels. Disposed between the electrodes is a non-electron conductive, fluid permeable separator element (), whereby wastewater is able to flow from one electrode to the other electrode. The electrodes and separator may be disposed within a housing () having a wastewater inlet opening (), and exhaust waste outlet opening () and a purified water outlet opening (). In this way, components of the system are easily replaced should the need arise.
