People Of Destiny: Americans As I Saw Them At Home And Abroad
Sir Philip Gibbs (May 1, 1877 - March 10, 1962) was an English journalist and novelist who served as one of five official British reporters during the First ...
A fixed blade knife or bayonet having integral blade and tang portions and a handle having a cavity extending therethrough from distal to proximal ends. A slot is formed in the tang, extending from an open end at the terminal end of the tang to a closed end, with a narrower slot portion extending from the open end and adjoining a wider portion which extends to the closed end of the slot. A nut having a threaded bore is formed with a first cross dimension slightly smaller than the width of the wider slot portion and a second cross dimension, larger than and perpendicular to the first cross dimension. The nut is inserted laterally into the wider slot portion and the tang, with the nut carried therein, is inserted into the handle cavity, which has a cross sectional outline corresponding to that of the combined tang and nut. A screw is inserted into the bore which forms a portion of the cavity extending into the proximal end of the handle. This bore has portions of different diameters, forming a shoulder which is engaged by the head of the screw, whereby tightening of the screw draws the nut, and thereby the tang, toward the distal end of the handle, holding the blade/tang fixedly to the handle.
A safety lock for a folding knife comprising a sliding safety button positioned in a slot formed in one side of the knife handle. The button includes a first portion extending outwardly from the handle for manipulation by a user, and a second portion having a beveled surface that is slidingly engageable with a pin protruding from the blade tang. The pin in the blade tang may comprise a pre-existing structure, such as that included in some assisted opening mechanisms, or may be specifically added to the blade tang of a conventional folding knife for the purposes of forming the safety mechanism of the present invention.
A hand tool including a handle portion and a substantially flat blade having a plurality of curvilinear configurations spaced about the peripheral outline thereof for cooperatively engaging certain portions of a rifle to perform various operations thereon. The blade is attached at one end to the handle portion, preferably with a pivotal connection permitting opening and closing movement in the nature of a folding pocket knife. The blade includes a squared end serving as a screwdriver tip on the end opposite the pivotally mounted end, a convex curved portion between two linear portions on one longitudinal edge, and an outwardly projecting tip or pin adjoining a concave, curved portion on the other longitudinal edge serving as a spanner wrench. Each of these three portions of the blade is engageable with one or more portions of conventional rifles, and/or auxiliary equipment used therewith, to assist in adjustment, assembly, disassembly, or the like.
Compact Folding Blade Knife With Blade Locking Feature
A hand tool, e. g. , a knife, includes a handle with a pair of spaced cover pieces, at least one blade or other implement pivotally attached to the handle for movement with respect thereto between folded and extended positions, a locking lever for maintaining the blade in the extended position until manually released, and a beam spring urging the lever toward the locking position. The tool also includes a liner in the form of a flat, metal plate affixed to one of the cover pieces within a recess closely surrounding the periphery of the liner and having a depth substantially equal to the liner's thickness. The beam spring is an integral part of the liner, being formed by a slotted or cut-away area providing an elongated arm integrally connected at one end to a body portion and having an opposite, terminal end portion extending laterally to bear against the locking lever.
Folding Knife With Open Lock Feature Having Improved Spring Element
A knife having at least one blade or other implement foldable about a pivot axis at one end of the handle. A separate lock lever is associated with each blade or implement and has an end portion engaging a notch in the blade adjacent the pivot point to prevent movement of the blade away from the open position until the lock is manually released. The lock levers are mounted for limited pivotal movement at an intermediate position and urged toward engagement of the one end portion with the blade notch when the blade is moved to its open or erected position by respective beam springs. The improved beam springs are mounted upon linings in a position laterally spaced from their respective lock levers. The beam spring end opposite the mounted end is curved and extends laterally through a hole in its associated lining and contacts its associated lock lever. The lock levers are released from the blade notches by pressing upon portions of the lock levers arranged in transverse grooves which are longitudinally offset along the back of the knife at the end opposite the end at which the blades are pivotally mounted.

Knife And Handle Construction And Method Of Fabricating Such Knives
A knife handle formed of two diverse materials includes a frame of rigid, thermosetting plastic having external surfaces and an elongated, internal cavity. A somewhat rubbery, resilient material covers portions of both the external surfaces and the cavity walls of the frame. The cavity is open at the distal end of the handle and is of substantially rectangular cross section. The resilient material covers all four walls of the cavity from the open end for a portion of its length, and covers only the two longer sides within the main body of the frame. A tang extending integrally from the knife blade is inserted into the cavity, contacting only the resilient material, with interference fit, within the cavity. Assembly is completed by inserting a rivet through aligned openings in the tang and handle, the handle openings being entirely surrounded by the resilient material.
The present invention is a folding knife having a minimal thickness while maintaining suitable strength and durability. The knife has a first elongated blade with a cutting edge and a tang of predetermined thickness through which a countersunk opening is formed; a knife handle to which the blade is attached for pivotal movement in a first blade plane between first and second terminal positions; and a first pivot mechanism pivotally connecting said first blade to said handle comprising first and second ends and that extends through the handle and the countersunk, the first end being substantially positioned within the first blade plane and the second end being positioned adjacent the handle.

Tariffs lift hopes for jobs in American mill towns
Philip Gibbs, an analyst with KeyBanc Capital Markets, said mills and smelters will have to run closer to full capacity to replace imports that get priced out of the U.S. market, providing a short-term kick, but he doesnt expect many more mills to restart besides those already announced.

Physics Community Afire With Rumors of Higgs Boson Discovery
rumors suggest nearly-there 4-sigma signals are turning up at both of the two separate LHC experiments that are hunting for the particle. As physicist Philip Gibbs points out on his blog, Vixra log, if each experiment is seeing a 4-sigma signal, then this is almost definitely the long-sought particle.
