  • Apparatus And Methods For Logging A Well Borehole With Controllable Rotating Instrumentation

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7377317, May 27, 2008
  • Filed:
    Apr 11, 2006
  • Appl. No.:
    11/279293
  • Inventors:
Paul Radzinski - The Woodlands TX, US
Kirk Towns - Houston TX, US
  • Assignee:
Precision Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    E21B 47/00
    E21B 47/01
  • US Classification:
    16625001, 166 66
  • Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a borehole conveyance system that is conveyed within the borehole by a tubular such as a drill string. The conveyance system integrates wireline type downhole instrumentation into drilling and drill string tripping operations that are typically performed in a borehole drilling operation. This increases the types of measurements that can be obtained during the drilling operation. Equipment costs and maintenance costs can thereby be reduced. Certain wireline type tools can be used during drilling operations to yield measurements superior to their LWD/MWD counterparts and to reduce operation costs. Other types of wireline tools can be used to obtain measurements not possible with LWD/MWD systems. The rotation of the tool conveyance system and instrumentation therein is optionally controllable with respect to the rotation of the drill string by a selective locking subassembly (SLS).
  • Extended Range Emf Antenna

  • US Patent:
    7518527, Apr 14, 2009
  • Filed:
    Apr 16, 2003
  • Appl. No.:
    10/511739
  • Inventors:
Paul E Radzinski - Spring TX, US
  • Assignee:
    Weatherford Canada Partnership - Edmonton
  • International Classification:
    G01V 3/00
  • US Classification:
    3408537, 3408544, 3408546, 175 40
  • Abstract:
A measuring while drilling system typically has a metal pipework extending underground connected to an antenna. The metal pipework and the antenna are both connected to a type of downhole equipment. The antenna transmits or receives signals to/from a transceiver located on the surface, and the transceiver is connected to the metal pipeword and to a ground. The system is improved by joining a plurality of sections of wired drill pipe together to form a section where the antenna is integral with the metal pipework. One end of the section of wired drill pipe is joined to downhole equipment and another end is joined to a conventional metal pipework.

  • Calculating Directional Drilling Tool Face Offsets

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20030070844, Apr 17, 2003
  • Filed:
    Oct 15, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/976129
  • Inventors:
Paul Radzinski - Spring TX, US
Michael Larronde - Houston TX, US
Jian-Qun Wu - Houston TX, US
  • International Classification:
    E21B007/04
  • US Classification:
    175/061000, 175/045000
  • Abstract:
A drilling tool has a bent sub or a defined “High Side”. An instrument housing which includes a magnetometer is secured to the directional drilling tool. The magnetometer measures the magnetic field vector in the plane perpendicular to the tool axis. Prior to running the directional drilling tool and the instrument housing into the well, a magnetic source is positioned next to the instrument housing at a position near the magnetometer. The magnetic source is made and positioned such that its magnetic field at the magnetometer points to the chalk line of the high side of a bent sub. The net magnetic field generated from the source is obtained by the difference in magnetic field measurements before and while the magnetic source is applied The azimuthal angle between the net magnetic field vector and the x-axis of the magnetometer or other direction sensor reference point used for tool face calculation is obtained by a computer. This angle is the angular difference or offset angle between the sensor tool face and the high side of the bent sub (as mimicked by the magnetic source). This offset angle is recorded as a signed () number and is added to the sensor tool face to produce the bent sub's high side tool face during the drilling operation. No manual measurement of the offset angle and input is required.
