MATTHEW S. THOENNES - WEST HARRISON NY, US
PETER YOCOM - LAGRANGEVILLE NY, US
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 9/50
  • US Classification:
    718104
  • Abstract:
A method, information processing system, and computer readable storage medium are provided for dynamically managing accelerator resources. A first set of hardware accelerator resources is initially assigned to a first information processing system, and a second set of hardware accelerator resources is initially assigned to a second information processing system. Jobs running on the first and second information processing systems are monitored. When one of the jobs fails to satisfy a goal, at least one hardware accelerator resource in the second set of hardware accelerator resources from the second information processing system are dynamically reassigned to the first information processing system.

  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/30
  • US Classification:
    707714, 707E17017
  • Abstract:
Techniques are provided for hardware-accelerated relational joins. A first table comprising one or more rows is processed through a hardware accelerator. At least one join column in at least one of the one or more rows of the first table is hashed to set at least one bit in at least one bit vector. A second table comprising one or more rows is processed through a hardware accelerator. At least one join column in at least one of the one or more rows of the second table is hashed to generate at least one hash value. At least one bit vector is probed using the at least one hash value. A joined row is constructed responsive to the probing step. The row-construction step is performed in the hardware accelerator.
  • Method And Apparatus For Managing Central Processing Unit Resources Of A Logically Partitioned Computing Environment Without Shared Memory Access

  • US Patent:
    20080215846, Sep 4, 2008
  • Filed:
    Sep 20, 2006
  • Appl. No.:
    11/533558
  • Inventors:
Jeffrey D. Aman - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Yuk L. Chan - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Yuksel Gunal - New York NY, US
Hiren R. Shar - Highland NY, US
Matthew S. Thoennes - West Harrison NY, US
Peter B. Yocom - Lagrangeville NY, US
  • International Classification:
    G06F 12/00
  • US Classification:
    711173, 711E12001
  • Abstract:
A method and apparatus for managing CPU resources of a logically partitioned computing environment without shared memory access. A logical partition needing additional resources sends a message requesting such resources to a central domain manager, which sends messages to other partitions in the same group requesting that they assess their ability to donate resources to the requesting partition. Upon receiving such assessment request, each logical partition assesses its ability to donate resources to the requesting partition and responds accordingly to the domain manager. If at least one partition responds that it can donate resources to the requesting partition, the domain manager sends a message to a selected donor partition requesting that it reconfigure itself to donate resources to the requesting partition. Upon receiving a notification from the donor partition that it has successfully reconfigured itself, the domain manager notifies the requesting partition, which reconfigures itself to accept the donated resources.
  • Offloading Projection Of Fixed And Variable Length Database Columns

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20170083570, Mar 23, 2017
  • Filed:
    Dec 8, 2016
  • Appl. No.:
    15/372653
  • Inventors:
    - Armonk NY, US
Parijat Dube - Yorktown Heights NY, US
Hong Min - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Bharat Sukhwani - Briarcliff Manor NY, US
Matthew S. Thoennes - West Harrison NY, US
  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/30
  • Abstract:
A computer-implemented method includes determining that a database query warrants a first projection operation to project a plurality of input rows to a plurality of projected rows, where each of the plurality of input rows has one or more variable-length columns. A first projection control block is constructed, by a computer processor, to describe the first projection operation. The first projection operation is offloaded to a hardware accelerator. The first projection control block is provided to the hardware accelerator, and the first projection control block enables the hardware accelerator to perform the first projection operation at streaming rate.

  • US Patent:
    20160019262, Jan 21, 2016
  • Filed:
    Sep 29, 2015
  • Appl. No.:
    14/868678
  • Inventors:
    - Armonk NY, US
Parijat Dube - Yorktown Heights NY, US
Hong Min - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Bharat Sukhwani - Briarcliff Manor NY, US
Matthew S. Thoennes - West Harrison NY, US
  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/30
  • Abstract:
In some embodiments, a query recipient is configured to determine that a database query warrants a first projection operation to project a plurality of input rows to a plurality of projected rows. Each of the input rows has one or more variable-length columns. A projection controller is configured to construct a first projection control block to describe the first projection operation. For this construction, the projection controller is configured to construct a plurality of projection control elements, each one corresponding to a corresponding column in the input rows, and a header to specify the order of the projection control elements. The projection controller is further configured to offload the first projection operation to a hardware accelerator, and to provide the first projection control block to the hardware accelerator, where the first projection control block enables the hardware accelerator to perform the first projection operation at streaming rate.
