Abstract:
Uphill quenching of metal alloys, such as aluminum alloys, is improved by conducting the heating step, after the quench-cooling step of the uphill quenching, using the elevated temperature vapor of a fluorochemical compound, preferably a perfluorocarbon compound. The vapor formed over a boiling bath of the perfluorocarbon compound comprises the heat source when it condenses on the relatively cooler alloy thus imparting its heat of condensation to the alloy.

Abstract:
A method for operating a continuous rotary carburizing furnace is disclosed, wherein a carburizing mixture is introduced into the furnace retort without inerts while an inert gas is introduced into the shell of the furnace without carbon containing gases. The method effects an increase in productivity through an increased rate of carburization of work pieces with less carburization or sooting of the furnace apparatus.

Abstract:
A method is described for improving the erosion and abrasion resistance of a sharp edged metal structure. A base layer of a noble metal is formed on the surface of the body of the structure followed by a chemical vapor deposited outer coating comprising a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide. The tungsten carbide is selected from the group consisting of W. sub. 2 C, W. sub. 3 C, and mixtures thereof and is fine grained, non-columnar and having a substantially layered microstructure. Also described is a sharp edged metal structure formed by the method.

Abstract:
Pattern material, such as wax, is removed from an investment casting mold by vapor phase-condensation heating with a fluorochemical boiling at a temperature above the melting point of the pattern material.
