    Feb 10, 1995
  • Appl. No.:
    8/388041
  • Inventors:
    Jurgen Zobel - Stamford CT
    Manfred Boebel - Oetisheim, DE
  • Assignee:
    Richard Wolf GmbH - Knittlingen
  • International Classification:
    A61B 106
  • US Classification:
    600166
  • Abstract:
A stereo endoscope has a shaft containing two optical systems which extend through the shaft and are arranged in close proximity to each other and a housing on the proximal end of the shaft for containing an interior holding assembly for a stereo optical device which provides a stereo view into the optical systems. The stereo optical device has on each side a duplicate, mirror-image arrangement having a first deviating prism aligned coaxially with its the associated optical system, a second deviating prism which follows the first prism and again aligns the optical axis of the associated optical system parallel to the direction of observation, and a transparent protective element in the direction of observation. The holding assembly includes a first holding part, which extends transverse to the optical axis of the two optical systems of the endoscope shaft. This holding part which is preferably a hollow cylinder, has interior recesses in which are placed, one each, a first, fixed deviating prism and a second, adjustable deviating prism.

    H04N 13/02
    A61B 1/04
    H04N 7/18
  • Abstract:
Optical systems for flexible and rigid endoscopes that have a low diffraction limit and small geometrical optical aberrations, the systems including an aperture stop where the diameter can be adjusted to select either higher resolution or higher depth of field. The optical systems can include a lens group either to focus on different object distances or on a fixed average object distance. The aperture stop can be adjusted to increase either depth of field or resolution dependent on the endoscopic and surgical situation. Simple symbols help the surgeon to adjust the aperture stop to these situations. The surgeon can either look around the body cavity with large depth of field but moderate overall resolution or focus on a small area with less depth of field but greater resolution. The balance between resolution and depth of field can be adjusted by an automatic image control. Fields in the image field are defined and software used in the camera controller analyzes the sharpness of the different fields. The center field is used to hold or define the sharpness of the image in the center field. Measurements of the sharpness in the peripheral fields define if more depth of field is needed or the resolution can be increased.
  • Endoscope With Pupil Expander

  • US Patent:
    20160004065, Jan 7, 2016
  • Filed:
    Feb 19, 2014
  • Appl. No.:
    14/768637
  • Inventors:
    - Pembroke Pines FL, US
Jurgen Zobel - Pembroke Pines FL, US
  • International Classification:
    G02B 23/24
    A61B 1/05
    G02B 23/02
    A61B 1/00
  • Abstract:
Disclosed are stereo endoscopes where the optical train of one optical system is separated in a left and right optical train. The separation in a left and right optical train is achieved by splitting the entrance pupil in a left and right pupil half. To additionally achieve a significant stereoscopic disparity the distance between the left and right pupil half is expanded. The separation of the entrance pupil and the expansion of the left and right pupil half is achieved by a distally located prism block. This prism block consists of a pair of rhomboidal prisms which are located exactly at the entrance pupil inside the endoscope objective. The front lens group is replaced by an identical pair of front lens groups each assembled in front of one of the two rhomboidal prisms. Such stereo endoscopes with expanded pupil halves enable to build stereo endoscopes with very small diameter or stereo endoscopes for special surgical applications. The described stereo endoscopes also include video endoscopes where the aperture functioning as the entrance pupil is separated in two halves and expanded for better stereoscopic effect. The prism block of the disclosed stereo endoscopes can also be used to separate the exit pupil of the disclosed stereo endoscopes and expand the optical axes on the proximal side to adapt to different stereo endoscopic cameras.

  • Abstract:
Disclosed is a stereo endoscope system comprising stereo endoscopes of varying working lengths, working diameters and directions of view. Each stereo endoscope comprises two identical optical systems where every pair of corresponding components is permanently couple in a sideways orientation. The system is capable of withstanding harsh conditions associated with medical equipment cleaning and sterilization, particularly, the high temperatures and pressures associated with autoclaving. Each of the corresponding components of the two identical optical systems is paired and moved relative to each other to adjust focus and then affixed to create a new singular optical component. The system includes a prism block that extends the distance between the optical axes on the stereo endoscope to the position of two video chips.
