    A profile for bearer data as found in IuUP and NbUP so that it can be signaled over SDP. The present invention provides AAL2 profiles that can be used to describe AAL2 bearer connections in a radio access network between a radio network controller (RNC) and a media gateway, or between two media gateways in a core network. In an embodiment, the call agent is a wireless call agent, such as a mobile switching center (MSC). The profiles provided by the present invention are used by the call agent to set up AAL2 bearer connections on the media gateway.

    In one embodiment, a router receives a call request for establishing a multimedia exchange between two remote endpoints. The router selects a processing entity to manage a subset of connections with the remote endpoints according to an endpoint identification such as a remote address included in the call request. A different processing entity manages the remaining connections with the remote endpoints. Accordingly, the load of managing signaling for establishing the multimedia exchange is balanced between a plurality of processing elements that appear externally as a single entity such that modification of remote endpoint behavior is not required.

    Some embodiments adaptively adjust to the current call load in a packet based virtual circuit to minimize the delay experienced by the first packets of any talk spurt for a particular active call. Some embodiments minimize the jitter introduced by multiplexing voice packets by smoothing out the waiting time experienced by each of the voice packets. Some embodiments effectively minimize jitter when the number of active calls on a virtual circuit drops off suddenly. Some embodiments are able to differentiate signaling packets indicating a telephony event from voice packets and give the signaling packets expedited processing with no delay contributed by the subcell multiplexing process. Other embodiments are described in the claims.

    In one embodiment, a Segment Routing network node provides efficiencies in processing and communicating Internet Protocol packets in a network. This Segment Routing node typically advertises (e.g., using Border Gateway Protocol) its Segment Routing processing capabilities, such as Penultimate Segment Pop (PSP) and/or Ultimate Segment Pop (USP) of a Segment Routing Header (including in the context of a packet that has multiple Segment Routing Headers). Subsequently, an Internet Protocol Segment Routing packet having multiple Segment Routing Headers is received. The packet is processed according to a Segment Routing function, with is processing including removing a first one of the Segment Routing Headers and forwarding the resultant Segment Routing packet. The value of the Segments Left field in the first Segment Routing Header identifies to perform PSP when the value is one, to perform USP when the value is zero, or to perform other processing.

    Systems and techniques are provided for implementing multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) header extensions. In some examples, a method can include, receiving, by a router of a MPLS network, a data packet. In some aspects, the method can include adding, by the router of the MPLS network, at least one entry to an MPLS stack of the data packet, wherein the at least one entry includes an MPLS extension indicator (MEI) that is associated with at least one of an in-stack extension header presence indicator (IPI) and a bottom-of-stack extension header presence indicator (BPI). In some examples, the method can include adding, based on the IPI and the BPI, at least one of an in-stack extension header and a bottom-of-stack extension header to the MPLS stack of the data packet.
