There is provided herein a graphite plate assembly including an injection molded plastic frame which carries the border detail for the graphite plate. The planar graphite plate is provided with a frame engaging protrusion around its periphery and with beveled edges bordering the broad top and bottom surfaces of the graphite plate. These beveled edges seal against respective beveled surfaces of the mold to prevent plastic from entering onto the graphite plate surfaces during injection molding of the frame. The graphite plate is held in position within the mold by a vacuum grid and locating pins while plastic is injected into the cavity space around the graphite plate from a plurality of spaced plastic injection gates.
The apparatus includes a mold core, a mold cavity and a moveable ring surrounding the mold cavity. A graphite/resin mixture is loaded into the mold cavity, filling a well area defined by the ring. The mold core is then pressed against the mixture in the mold cavity and heat is applied to harden the resin. The mold core is then raised, the ring is lowered, and the finished part is ejected.
Method And Apparatus For Compression Molding Of A Graphite Plate
A moveable table has a target area defined thereon. A hopper filled with an accurate amount of the moldable graphite mixture sifts and meters this mixture through screens onto the target area. The moveable table then shifts to place the target area over the mold cavity, whereupon a door is opened to allow the graphite material to drop evenly into the mold cavity. The compression mold includes a moveable ring surrounding the mold cavity which defines a well for receipt of the graphite material. After compression molding, the mold is opened and the ring is lowered to expose the finished part for removal.
