  • Capacitive Oil Life Sensor

    view source
  • US Patent:
    56315686, May 20, 1997
  • Filed:
    Aug 31, 1995
  • Appl. No.:
    8/522472
  • Inventors:
George Codina - North Hollywood CA
Donna J. Murr - Dunlap IL
    Chandrasekar Ramamoorthy - Normal IL
  • Assignee:
    Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
  • International Classification:
    G01R 2726
  • US Classification:
    324690
  • Abstract:
An apparatus for determining the remaining life of hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic system having a hydraulic container includes a capacitor formed by a pair of electrodes. A charging circuit produces a charging current of constant magnitude. The charging current is used to charge the capacitor to a predetermined voltage. A timing circuit measures the elapsed time between the time at which the charging circuit begins to produce the charging current and the time at which the capacitor has been charged to the predetermined voltage. The timing circuit also produces a pulse width modulated signal. The magnitude of the pulse width modulated signal is indicative of the time difference. A controller receives the pulse width modulated signal and determines the life of the hydraulic fluid.
  • Integral Position Sensing Apparatus For A Hydraulic Directional Valve

  • US Patent:
    54978041, Mar 12, 1996
  • Filed:
    Jun 27, 1994
  • Appl. No.:
    8/266060
  • Inventors:
George Codina - North Hollywood CA
Eldon D. Oestmann - Morton IL
Gary J. Shane - Edelstein IL
  • Assignee:
    Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
  • International Classification:
    F16K 3700
  • US Classification:
    137554
  • Abstract:
An apparatus for determining the spool position of a directional valve is disclosed. A longitudinal valve housing has opposed ends and a plurality of fluid ports, and a spool moves reciprocatingly within the valve housing. A first spring disposed adjacent an end of the spool extends and retracts with the reciprocating movement of the spool. A first oscillator circuit is coupled to the first spring and is adapted to produce a first position signal in response to the inductance of the first spring. Finally, a logic device determines the incremental linear position of the spool relative to the housing in response to the frequency of the first position signal.

A timing circuit measures the elapsed time between the time at which the charging circuit begins to produce the charging current and the time at which the capacitor has been charged to the predetermined voltage. The timing circuit produces a pulse width modulated signal. The magnitude of the pulse width modulated signal is indicative of the time difference and thus, the pressure within the container.
  • Oil And Gas Production Enhancement Using Electrical Means

    view source
  • US Patent:
    46677380, May 26, 1987
  • Filed:
    Apr 29, 1985
  • Appl. No.:
    6/728612
  • Inventors:
    George Codina - Hartsdale NY
  • Assignee:
    CEEE Corporation - Stamford CT
  • International Classification:
    E21B 4326
    E21B 4900
  • US Classification:
    166248
  • Abstract:
Disclosed is a method and apparatus for enhancing oil and/or gas production from a subterranean well by using high energy, short duration electrical pulses to fracture underground rock formations containing entrapped oil or gas. The invention obviates the large power requirements of the prior art devices by generating a series of constant pulses having different durations into the rock formation to determine its characteristic impedance. Once the characteristic impedance has been determined, a second pulse having an amplitude and duration matching this characteristic impedance is discharged into the rock formation to alter its dynamic characteristics. A third pulse is then discharged into the rock formation to cause its fracture.

  • Capacitive Sensing Apparatus For Sensing A Plurality Of Operating Parameters Associated With A Variable Displacement Piston Pump

    view source
  • US Patent:
    61527025, Nov 28, 2000
  • Filed:
    Mar 24, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    9/275300
  • Inventors:
George Codina - North Hollywood CA
Donna J. Murr - Dunlap IL
  • Assignee:
    Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
  • International Classification:
    F04B 4900
  • US Classification:
    417 63
  • Abstract:
An apparatus and method for sensing a parameter of a hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump includes a housing and an input shaft. The shaft is rotationally driven relative to the housing and electrically coupled to the housing. The hydraulic pump forms a variable capacitor. The apparatus includes an electrode portion positioned adjacent to the input shaft and is electrically isolated from the housing and input shaft. The electrode portion and the input shaft form a fixed capacitor. The fixed capacitor and the variable capacitor are coupled. The apparatus supplies electrical energy to the electrode portion and produces a capacitive signal indicative of the capacitance value of the variable capacitor. The apparatus further applies a filter to the capacitive signal and produces a filtered capacitive signal. The parameter of the hydraulic pump is determined as a function of the filtered capacitive signal.
