  • Beam Type Hardness Tester For Elastomeric Material And Method Of Testing

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41821920, Jan 8, 1980
  • Filed:
    Sep 28, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/946772
  • Inventors:
George A. Argabrite - Malibu CA
William C. Sanford - Woodland Hills CA
  • International Classification:
    G01N 314
  • US Classification:
    73818
  • Abstract:
An apparatus for testing hardness of elastomeric material comprising a pivotally mounted beam assembly for measuring deformation of the material when a calibrated mass is applied thereto. A horizontal anvil member supports the material being tested which is selectively positioned on the anvil member in accordance with a cross-sectional dimension of the material. The calibrated mass or weight is slidably positioned on the beam assembly also in correlation with said dimension. A measuring gauge measures the beam assembly when the test material is gripped between the beam assembly and anvil member, and indicates hardness on a scale correlated to the measured cross-sectional dimension of the material. The gauge and a lateral extension of the beam assembly are magnetically coupled. A method of measuring hardness of elastomeric material including the steps of measuring an unstressed dimension of the material, imposing on the sample material an amount of compressive force determined by the unstressed dimension, and measuring the amount of deformation of the sample.
  • Multipositionable Support Means For A Hardness Tester

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41966163, Apr 8, 1980
  • Filed:
    Sep 28, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/946773
  • Inventors:
George A. Argabrite - Malibu CA
William C. Sanford - Woodland Hills CA
  • Assignee:
Pacific Transducer Corporation - Los Angeles CA
  • International Classification:
    G01N 344
    G01D 1130
  • US Classification:
    73 81
  • Abstract:
A support for a hardness testing device, the support being capable of positioning the hardness testing device to measure hardness of a surface in different positions. The multipositionable support comprises a pair of elongted parallel support members along which is supported a slidably adjustable cross-beam member for positioning a hardness device relative to a surface being tested. Each support member has pivotally connected to one of its ends a magnetic means which may be moved about its pivotal axis and rotated about the axis of its support member for alignment of the magnet means with an adjacent supporting surface. The magnet means has sufficient holding power to fixedly and rigidly hold the support against the force applied to the indentor of the testing device. The hardness testing device is coupled to an actuator knob at the cross-beam and is supported at the cross-beam.
  • Probe Surface Thermometer

  • US Patent:
    41214633, Oct 24, 1978
  • Filed:
    Feb 22, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/771611
  • Inventors:
George A. Argabrite - Malibu CA
  • Assignee:
Pacific Transducer Corporation - Los Angeles CA
  • International Classification:
    G01K 562
  • US Classification:
    733637
  • Abstract:
A thermometer for measuring a surface temperature having in its lower portion a spiral bimetallic strip mounted centrally on the lower end of a spindle whose upper end carries an indicating pointer. The spindle is journaled in an elongated tubular stem carrying at its upper end a dial face bearing angularly spaced indicia with which the pointer cooperates for indicating temperature. The lower end of the stem has fixed thereto a cup-shaped shield, downwardly open, surrounding the bimetallic strip, and including means restraining angular movement of the outer end of the bimetallic strip, but permitting limited axial movement of the strip and spindle relative to the stem and shield.
  • Hardness Testing Instrument

  • US Patent:
    39657272, Jun 29, 1976
  • Filed:
    Oct 17, 1974
  • Appl. No.:
    5/515654
  • Inventors:
George A. Argabrite - Los Angeles CA
  • International Classification:
    G01N 348
  • US Classification:
    73 81
  • Abstract:
An instrument for measuring and indicating the hardness of such compressible materials as plastic foam compositions, including a frame adapted to be conveniently manipulated by the user, an indentor movably mounted in the frame and resiliently biased downwardly relative to the frame, the indentor having a downwardly directed thin elongated convex marking edge projecting through an elongated slot formed in a lower plate of the frame. The plate has a lower contour matingly congruent with the contour of the sample to be tested, and its relatively large area serves to limit downward movement of the frame toward the sample; thus, the length of the line of penetration of the indentor marking edge into the sample becomes a measure of the density of the sample. Desirably the marking edge is preliminarily colored by a suitable material, such as being rolled on a conventional stamp inking pad; after testing, the length of the colored line on the sample, suitably calibrated, is a measure of the hardness of the sample and, indirectly, of its density. A longitudinal scale is provided on the frame for convenience in measuring the length of the indented line.
