Earl Pomeroy, a former Democratic congressman from North Dakota who is now a Washington lawyer, said the national focus on the federal budget deficit will make it more difficult for Republicans to press for an extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts without covering their cost.
Last year, Republican John Hoeven easily won the Senate seat long held by Democrat Byron Dorgan, who retired after three terms. The GOP's Rick Berg, who is considering the Senate race next year, defeated incumbent congressman Earl Pomeroy.

NC Rep. Watt wants to defund panel that investigated him
Watt was referring to former Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., who lost to a tea party-backed candidate in a tough year for Democrats. Watt, however, comfortably held on to his district, which winds from Charlotte toward Greensboro, by a 64 percent margin.
