A self-propelled, walk-behind mower includes a mower blade housing provided with a discharge opening. The mower is selectively readied for operating in mulching, side discharging or bagging modes by respectively securing a cover, side discharge chute or bagging chute over the discharge opening. An electrical ignition interlock system is provided for preventing operation of the engine in the absence of the cover or one of the chutes being properly secured over the opening, the interlock further requiring a material-receiving bag to be secured in material-receiving relationship to a discharge opening of the bagging chute when the latter is installed on the mower.
A self-propelled walk-behind mower includes blade and traction drive clutch control levers associated with a deadman control lever which operates a pair of lever latches such that it is necessary for the deadman control lever to be held depressed against the guide handle of the mower to allow the blade and traction drive control lever to be held in respective clutch-engage positions, the control levers being biased to automatically return to respective clutch-disengage positions once the deadman control lever is released. A pair of latch release levers are respectively operative to selectively actuate one or the other of the lever latches so as to permit one or the other of the blades and traction drive control clutches to automatically return to its clutch-disengage position when the deadman control lever is held depressed against the operator's handle.
A safety shield composed of an extruded sheet of material with upper, lower and intermediate tubular portions. The upper tubular portion is mounted on the rear axle of a lawn mower. Notches are provided in the sheet that extend from the upper tubular edge downwardly into the sheet and terminate above the intermediate tubular portion. The notches permit relative free fore-and-aft swinging of the entire shield on the axle without creating interference with portions of the mower housing. The intermediate and lower tubular portions have stiffener rods extending therethrough which restrict distortion of the shield and which may contact the lower extremities of the mower housing.
