As a young athlete I only thought about playing professional baseball or becoming a minister-a seedling waiting to sprout. Dad urged me to pursue a naval career and attend Annapolis like he and my brother did. I spent 8 1/2 years on that misguided plan. I became opposed to the war in Vietnam and met a lot of angry people about how American military power abuses third world countries in the name of anti-communism. I would have never listened to such prophetic voices had I not been confronted by a friend about Vietnam who was studying law at Berkeley while I was in the Navy. I went to Cal State Long Beach at 28 and studied History, and Literature. That opened up my consciousness and awakened a passion to do something meaningful with my life. Luckily I survived many dangers I faced in my life and found a fulfilling profession as a civil rights attorney. Helping those whose rights were infringed satisified that urge to make something of my life. So did falling in love with a creative dancer and teacher and raising three children who are caring people with bright futures.
