    A system for activating a merchandise card and account that permits a card user to initially purchase or reload cash value into a merchandise account using a card issued by an issuer such as a merchant, bank, or card association via a terminal, with or without a PIN, and have the cash value on the card immediately converted to a purchase of proxy merchandise offered by the card issuer, and at the time of account debiting allowing said cardholder to make a final selection of merchandise from the inventory of the issuing merchant. The system operates a network, on a real time or batch basis, that uses a communication system to connect point of sale terminals, remote terminals, and computers operated by card issuers, merchant headquarters, and account processors to issue cards, calculates taxes and merchant costs, converts cash to proxy merchandise, and allows cardholders at the time of debiting their account to substitute the proxy purchase for a final selection of merchandise.

    Accumulating credits from financial movements to and from accounts held by a financial transactor and managed by an account manager involves initiating a roundup by periodically accessing entries in the account with an information processor to round up entries in the account, rounding up the entries in the account to obtain a total roundup amount, withdrawing the roundup amount from the account and debiting the account with the roundup amount. In one embodiment the information processor is external to and out of control of the account manager. At non-bank and bank locations send deposits and payments, in cash and/or checks, to financial institutions by using a remote input to truncate the paper checks and the cash used in the transaction.

    The present invention provides a system for accumulating credits from a customer account belonging to the customer and managed by an institution and placing the credits into a provider account. The system includes an information processor including a data store with data identifying the customer, the rounding determinant, the managed institution, and the account. The data store includes data authorizing the processor to access and read the customer account and further includes data to calculate rounders after receiving a plurality of payment transactions from the read customer account and to calculate an excess based on the rounders. The data store also includes data to withdraw the excess from the customer account and data to transfer the withdrawn excess to the provider account.

    A purchasing system allows consumers to do their customary shopping and paying at the point of sale and simultaneously earn rebates for their favorite nonprofits. To qualify their purchases for a rebate, the shopper or nonprofit supporter provides the clerk with a transaction card that is scanned or swiped into the POS terminal (cash register). The central computer system keeps track of the amount of the purchase and the ID number. The system computes the amount of rebate and sends reports to all parties.
