A self contained gas spring comprising a cylindrical housing having a closed end, an open end and a cylindrical bore. A cylindrical sleeve extends into the bore of the housing. The sleeve has at least a portion thereof forming an internal cylindrical surface. A piston rod extends through an opening in the sleeve and has a piston contacting the cylindrical surface. A portion of the sleeve defines a first space between the sleeve and the bore of the housing. The first space communicates with a second space between the piston end of the piston rod and the closed end of the housing. A charging valve is provided in the closed end of said housing for charging the space at the piston end of said piston rod and the space between the sleeve and the housing with gas under pressure. A third axial space is provided between the cylindrical surface on the sleeve and the piston rod above the piston and is isolated from the first space and second space. When the gas escapes past seals into the third space a pressure limiting one-way valve comprising an annular groove, circumferentially spaced passages and an annular elastic seal which normally seals the groove relieves pressure in the third space when it exceeds the pressure in the first space, the annular seal is tensioned such that at least a portion thereof is flexed out of engagement with the diverging surfaces to vent the third space into the first space.
Apparatus For Controlling Height Of Corrugations Formed In A Continuous Length Of Strip Stock
In a machine for corrugating a continuous length of strip stock fed between a pair of corrugation rollers, apparatus controls height of corrugations formed by the rollers by selectively varying tension on the strip stock fed between the rollers. Such apparatus includes a sensor for measuring actual height of corrugations formed by the rollers, and a clutch for applying tension to the strip stock upstream of the rollers, with the height of corrugations varying as a direct function of tension applied to the strip stock. A tension sensor is positioned between the clutch and the forming rollers for measuring tension applied to the strip stock and controlling the clutch accordingly.
A fluid die spring comprises a cylinder connected at one end to a reservoir of gas at high pressure. A piston in the cylinder has a smaller diameter rod projecting out the other end of the cylinder for engagement with a movable die member. The rod end of the cylinder has a high pressure seal engaging the rod and arranged to prevent leakage of liquid die lubricant into the cylinder.
A die is clamped to the bolster plate of a press by means of clamps around the sides of the die. Each clamp is operated by a rotatable shaft which extends from the clamp to the front side of the press. The operating shafts for the clamps at the rear side of the die are disposed below the die.
A die stamping system for use in a fine blanking apparatus that includes opposed die members which clamp a metal workpiece to be cut and pierced after which the die members are moved away from one another and the slugs pierced from the blank and the cut blanks are subsequently ejected wherein the ejector is controlled for a selected delay time by a plurality of cylinder assemblies mounted in a manifold so that they are connected to a source of inert gas such as nitrogen under high pressure. Each cylinder assembly includes a first piston associated with and exposed to the nitrogen in the manifold and a second piston engaged by the first piston and urged outwardly into engagement with a punch base. A hydraulic circuit is associated with the second piston and controlled by a valve such that upon downward movement of the first piston hydraulic fluid may flow freely without inhibiting the movement of the first piston, but upon actuation of the valve, hydraulic fluid locks the first piston and thereby prevents it from moving upwardly until the valve is actuated so that a predetermined time delay is provided.
A die clamp arrangement for a press has a clamping lever that is shifted horizontally by a dog between an extended and a retracted position and rotated in a vertical plane between a clamping position and a released position. The cam and dog are interconnected for rotation in unison by a single shaft. In the retracted position the clamping lever is adapted to permit vertical movement of a die into and out of a press. Means are provided for actuating the clamps at the rear and at each side of the die from the front side of the press. The clamps at the front and/or the rear sides of the press are arranged to be pivoted from an operative position downwardly to an out-of the-way position below the top face of the press bolster.
A flexible boot surrounds a piston rod and is sealed at one end to the free end portion of the piston rod and at its other end to the rod end of the associated cylinder. The head end of the cylinder is connected to a source of gas under pressure and the interior of the boot communicates freely with the interior of the cylinder at the rod end thereof. A check valve is provided for relieving the pressure in the boot when it reaches a predetermined value.
A high pressure die cylinder and manifold system including a plurality of die cylinders mounted on a manifold. Each die cylinder includes a cylinder body in which a piston rod and a piston is positioned for limited relative movement with respect to the cylinder body. A cup shaped piston sealing ring is mounted on the cylinder body for engagement with the piston rod and a cup shaped sealing ring is mounted on the piston for engagement with the cylinder body. A lubricant metering ring is mounted on the piston intermediate the sealing rings and the piston has a lubricant chamber that communicates with circumferentially spaced openings in the lubricant metering ring for delivering lubricant to the exterior of the sealing ring. The cylinder body is provided with a radial annular flange, a cylindrical pilot surface and a portion below the pilot surface of the cylinder body is threaded by interengaging threads with an opening in the manifold so that the lower end of the gas cylinder communicates with high pressure gas within the manifold. The manifold is provided with an annular seat surrounding the opening into which the gas cylinder extends and a U-shaped cup manifold sealing ring is provided in the seat and held into position by engagement of the radial flange and a pilot surface on the cylinder body with the manifold.
